This year is pretty much coming to an end. As I am always curious about new trends and what is going to happen in the next year, it can keep me up for quite a bit! I know we can’t predict the future or whatever but it’s just that I would like to know. Then again it is our role as marketers to try to predict these trends anyway.
This time I will try to put all my twisted strange ideas about the changing social media trends in 2015 in 1 blog and try to show my predictions in changes. As i will only write about changes i will keep the steady running relatively newer and still massively growing social media such as pintrest out of the conversation.
A bumpy grumpy Facebook
To kick all of this off, I think Facebook will have a bumpy ride down on its way to the internet graveyard. I’m not saying it will completely crash or anything, however the user demand will go down. A lot of people are already getting sick from the fact that all they see on Facebook is the advertisement in their timeline instead of the status updates of their friends. This is something that completely matches my opinion, as I really don’t give a single bit that 3 of my friends like the (insert random brand here) page.
Ok well Facebook is now coming up with a ‘Filtered Feed’ that does not show me these pages anymore; it only shows the pages that paid most for it. This means a company has to pay a whole lot of money in order for their advertisement to reach me, although I already liked their page. This brings it to the big advantage that small companies will not advertise anymore, as they don’t have enough money to get their products to me. This way Facebook is no longer interesting for new and upcoming companies who will find a new way of advertising which wont be on Facebook. Add all this on top of the privacy cases from people and you will have a steady stream of leaving users in 2015.
As Facebook goes down a new platform will rise. One platform that is already on the rise is Ello, this platform is now still in Beta but is going the right way. Ello is not based on selling your private data and mapping your social connection but based on privacy. O yeah another awesome thing about it is: No advertisement. Currently the platform is a bit ‘hipsterish’ and I am not 100% sure if the success of Ello is based on the anti-facebook, we care for your privacy buzz or if people are just searching for new experiences online. All in all I am convinced the platform will gain a whole lot of members in 2015 as everyone is already screaming for my invites.
Will we finally get relieved from Google+?
A failure from the start that declares it self the biggest social network! (I almost pissed myself while I write this) Who actively uses Google+ euhhhm… let me think, no I cannot come up with anyone. Techcrunch even declares the platform as being ‘The walking dead’! Combined with all the failures Google has made on social media and the departure of their Chief ‘Vic Gundotra’ this is just the next in line. Bye bye Google+ and every Google social platform we didn’t want you in 2013, we didn’t want you in 2014 we never want you! Off to the graveyard!
Vine vs Instagram
The last year I have noticed an on going battle between Vine and Instagram. Instagram has the big advantage of being in the Facebook group, which makes it more likely to appear in the timeline. Vine has the advantage of being Vine and being the first one the come up with the short video concept. In the end I think Instagram will eventually win the battle as it has over 200 million users and will keep on growing. The platform is also friendlier for advertisers and will in this way be used by this group keeping it as active as possible. Instagram already allows companies to get their videos and pictures featured in your timeline, I don’t know if this will kill and make Vine grow. This battle could go either way for now I call it a tie.
*DING DING DING*
A rematch in 2015 will show us the final knock out!
As we can see, we can’t predict the future, we can however think ahead! New ways of media will always appear and maybe there will be platforms rising within weeks, we simply don’t know. The best thing we can do is keep them in mind and figure out how we as marketers can make use the advantage of the new platforms.
