Forum, podcast, blog and the list goes on with the choices to try yourself out online and show your ideas. But what does social media mean exactly and how does it work? Antony Mayfield answers these questions in his book ‘What is social media?’
The author’s short summery book of the phenomenon called social media is written for those who want to learn basic steps and gain knowledge of its background. As time passes, the media changes with it. The number of social media users worldwide is ever-increasing and its usage getting popular. According to a statistic data it has reached 1.4 billion people around the world in 2014 and it is still growing. (For more information click here.)
The book makes differences between the basic forms of social media and briefly summarizes the discrepancies:
- social network
- content communities
Today high-speed internet access gives the opportunity for everyone to have a live blog site, make and built their own community through online media. Feedbacks given by the users/readers helps to improve their own skills. With optimal effort everyone can create and upload video or sound to share with the followers.
Mayfield encourages everyone to get out of the box and find the way closest to their personality. He says “Social computing is not a fad. Nor is it something that will pass you or your company by. Gradually, social computing will impact almost every role, at every kind of company, in all parts of the world.” (What is social media? Antony Mayfield 01.08.08. pg 3.)
How does social network function?
People joining the social network create profiles and connect with friends or invite them to join it. Facebook, the online social networking service, for instance, offers free membership and after registering users can create a personal profile, through which they can upload photos, send messages, post status, share videos and give notifications when friends update their profile. Facebook is increasing in its users with 1.3 billion active in 2014, and extensive privacy policies.
The other side of the networking system is LinkedIn which is mostly a business oriented network service, mainly used for professional networking. A report says that LinkedIn has more than 259 million users worldwide.
The huge success of these sites show that the online future has just started. Social media is not a fad, it is another way of expressing yourself and find your own community to be with. Still have doubts? Take a look at this video and try to say ‘no’ to social media after.
