A BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself, “ wow! what a sea of valuable content. I can’t wait to spread the word and get people reading it too.”
One book that fits this sensation is Let’s talk: Social guide for small business. This is a short E-marketing book written by John Jantsch.
When it comes to marketing as a whole and especially e-marketing, John Jantsch is a guru in his field and can lead you to success if you carefully take not of his advice. He is a digital technology coach and an award-winning author of the book: Duct Tape Marketing: The world’s most practical small business marketing guide.
I personally believe that this book is to be read by anyone in need of harnessing the power of social media on their small businesses. More so, those who wish to gain foundational knowledge In this field.
Here’s why I think so:
To simply register your business on social media platforms is not much of a strategy. You may actually think you’ll be good at it because you have personal accounts in these platforms where you occasionally share and consume content, but business centered social media activities are completely different from your day-to-day Facebook, Twitter activities. Unless you have good and valuable basic knowledge on how to use these platforms, your e-business activities will be as good as nothing.
Another reason I think this book is helpful is the fact that it is very informally written in a simple style any person can understand. You don’t have to be a marketing pro to read it. It’s style and use of language is sufficient enough to help you get through the basic ideas that it talks about.
For those afraid of being lost in a sea of information, you do not have to worry when reading this book. With only 43 pages, the e-book gives you an overview of the biggest social media platforms and how to use them.
What should you expect to get from this book?
- An overview on how your business can exploit social media marketing as a whole: Before discussing each platform in detail, the author takes the reader through a quick journey of the social media sites with real life examples from case studies. This is to give you a general impression on how the sites can benefit your business when correctly used.
- A short description of the various types of social media and their differences: The mainly discussed platforms include, Facebook Twitter and LinkedIn. There is an extensive review on how a business can use each of these platforms as well. The author provides tips on each section together with his personal ideas and reflections on each of the sections.
- Guidelines on how to improve your SEO and traffic: Except from discussing the details on how to use the social platforms, the author also discusses how one can use social media to generate traffic to the company website.
Although this is a short book, I believe it is very helpful for any person out there that has just started their own small business and want to get out the word on social websites. The simplicity of the language and it’s writing style allow you to grasp the main points without feeling lost in the maze of information.
However, I highly recommend that you read other books on the same topic if you would like to know more about social media marketing. As I mentioned earlier, this book provides a good foundational know-how and gives detailed information on the social websites. However, it doesn’t give you more in depth information on how to calculate the number of people that follow your websites or even how to track them. It Is therefore wise and advisable to read other books to improve your knowledge.
Also, although it give information on traffic on your website ( conversion), it does not extensively explain how to improve your own website or the social media platforms.
Other books I recommend reading include;
Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to tell your story in a noisy social world: Social media expert Gary Vaynerchuk takes you through a more in-depth journey on how to win at social media. In this book he gives more insight on how to launch social media successful campaign.
He also talks about high quality content specific for each social media platform and how to adapt your content to cater the needs of consumers.
The book can also be accessed on Amazon Kindle for $2.38 or $14,60 hard copy.
Inbound marketing revised and updated. Attract, engage, and delight customers Online. Brian Halligan founder and CEO of Hubspot – an inbound marketing company, provides a guide on increasing visibility and engagement on social media.
The author talks about how to make sure your business gets found online. He also discusses how one can develop strategies and how to track down their progress.
This book is available for $14 and on kindle for $11 .
I hope this short reflection of the book gets your attention and makes you want to read and share what you have learnt as much as I did.
