Nowadays there are tons of platforms on which visitors can visit your website, desktops, phones and tables are the best example. The amount of users of mobile phones keep growing and this means that the need for good mobile websites grow as well. The problem is often that a company only has a desktop website, or that the mobile website is over-or under-coded which will make you lose visitors which in turn are potential clients. For website owners it is often a problem to keep their website performing a 100 percent at all times. That is why Responsive Web Design or in short RWD is a great solution.
What is RWD?
RWD can be shortly described as a tool that makes it possible for website owners to have only one design work on all platforms. RWD refits this design automatically on whatever platform the website is being accessed on. Imagine you constantly have to redesign a web page for both a desktop, a phone and a tablet, Really time consuming and quite boring don’t you think. RWD allows you to only redesign it once and let templates and plugins do the rest.
Personally I love to use my phone to read the news or pay a bill, in fact I don’t think I could live without it anymore. If have to admit, I am pretty impatient, I don’t like to wait and I am easily bored. Visiting a website on my mobile phone is really an outcome for me, you can check the news in the morning without having to wait until you computer or laptop is fully working, or even worse wait until the paper arrives. What I also like about surfing on my phone is that it is so damn easy to scroll trough websites like bol.com or amazon.com and search/buy a product when I need it. Still I encounter a lot of websites that do not work on my phone or work very slowly, reason for me to immediately surf somewhere else.
Of course, you can say that it is just me and that my wants and needs do not count for the rest of the internet users. Sure, I guess that is fair enough if you would not consider the numbers, but as it is number do not lie. Right now there are 5 times as much mobile phone at work than desktops, and an huge number of 91 percent of the adults keeps it phone within arm’s reach. And I am not the only impatient one, Google suggests a loading time of only two seconds or you risk losing visitors and customers. Two seconds can you believe it..
That’s why it is important for website owners to make their website easily accessible and usable on all platforms. Since this is so time consuming RWD is the perfect outcome. The fact that templates and plugins are designed and submitted by software developers all over the world reduces the communication gap between the supplier and the purchaser. If something is wrong or you need assistance there is always someone knowledgeable around the figuratively corner.
But is that not why we have apps?
Well, good point. However, research pointed out that 73 percent of the Smartphone users use the mobile web to make a purchase instead of an app. Besides is it not easier to built a website only once?
Not really unique is it….
Do not become lazy because of all the work RWD already does for you but keep looking for new ways to optimize your website. It is all about beating you competitors is it not. There are some things that you should keep into consideration, for example chose a unique template, usually templates are branch specific, a reason why a lot of competitors nowadays have a similar website design.
Think about templates for online streaming services for example, most of them look the same. Since they all look the same it is quit hard for a website owner to decide which template it is going to be, but the real problem is often that the same counts for the customer, why should the customer chose your products or services if he or she cannot tell the difference between you and your competitor.
Another important things is branding, the plugins and templates will not do that for you, and why would you want them to? Branding is your chance to customize your website to portray the company’s style, message and images in a way that is unique for you company. People need to recognize your brand. When using RWD it is also very important not to over-or under-code, over-coding can lead to a longer load time which means losing visitors, under-coding can cause performance issues and is therefore also a reason for people to leave the website. Bt investing time in custom design you will be able to get the coding right and have your website on whatever platform it is accessed on run smoothly.
To sum it all up, RWD is a very successful tool to keep control over your websites and keep them up to date without losing heaps of time. By doing so you also meet the wishes and expectations of the audience. Just make sure to customize and show the audience just how unique you are
