Hello there traveller 😀
Planning another holiday? In case you are…
Allow me to introduce you to 5 must try foods from around the world.
MUST TRY FOODS: PAELLA VALENCIANA
Everybody who has visited Spain, knows they are crazy about their paellas. There is not one single Spanish restaurant that will not serve this famous dish. There are many paella variations such as paella with seafood, paella with chicken, paella with vegetables, mixed paella etc. But, when searching for the best paella served in Spain, the Spanish will advice you to try the paella Valenciana from Valencia.
The biggest difference between a traditional paella and the paella Valenciana is that this paella does not contain any seafood. The main and most important ingredient in the paella Valenciana is the ‘arroz Valenciana’ also known as Valencian rice. Other ingredients are chicken, rabbit, tomato base, garrafo (which are special white beans from Valencia), flat green beans and saffron.
MUST TRY FOODS: MOUSSAKA
Kalimera, kalispera y kalinichta! Good day, good afternoon and good evening where the first Greek words I learned when I visited this beautiful country. My fourth, and probably most favorite word after that, became moussaka.
First I thought this dish was a variation of the Italian lasagna, and in a certain way you can say it is, but then without the pasta leaves. Moussaka exists of several layers of minced meat, sliced potatoes, sliced eggplant, onions and zucchini topped with a béchamel sauce. All these ingredients might sound a little boring, but when put together you will be pleasantly surprised of how tasteful this dish is!
MUST TRY FOODS: RENDANG
If you love spicy meat, the Indonesian rendang is a must-try before you die dish! Rendang is definitely one of my all time favorite dishes when it comes down to meat. The combination of coconut milk and bumbu makes the meat have this beautiful chocolate brown colour, which, by the way, is not easy to achieve. Making a good rendang can take up to 4 hours! The exquisite taste of rendang is something you will never forget and makes you want to eat it over and over and over again.
There are many variations of rendang, such as chicken rendag, cow-liver rendang, duck rendang so it is up to you to find out which rendang you prefer! If you ever decide to go to Indonesia, I promise that you will fall in love with this explosively refined dish.
MUST TRY FOODS: DIM SUM
It’s delicious, convenient and actually also a lot of fun! Dim sum, or literally translated ‘touch your heart’, is traditional lunch food in China. All pieces are actually bite-size, so no need to worry about your chopsticks; just pick and eat.
Dim sum dishes are either fried or steamed. Some traditional dim sum are baked roast bbq pork puffs, prawn croquettes, custards buns, rice noodle rolls and steamed chicken with ginger. As there are so many more dim sum dishes to try out, you will best enjoy it with good friends and some tea.
MUST TRY FOODS: CEVICHE
We already know that Shakira’s hips don’t lie, and now please believe me when I say that Peruvian food is something you want to have tried in your life! When laying on the beach in the sunny afternoon and it’s time for lunch, I highly recommend you to try the Peruvian ceviche.
This dish consists of raw fish marinated in citrus juice, spiced with red onion and aji pepper. The acid from the citrus sort of ‘cooks’ the fish, giving it a very subtle flavor. Now, for the daredevils out there: if you are bold enough, you can drink the leftover citrus marinade. Peruvians call this leftover leche de tigre or in plain English ‘tiger milk’.
