LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW…
For some, the winter can be a depressing, grey season. However, there is nothing like a cosy Christmas market to light up these winter days and make you forget the cold for a little while. This is why I’ve made a list of my top 2 favourite, local winter fairs in Utrecht.
Weekend December 12 and 13
In this weekend the ‘Zelfgemaakte markt’, or in English, the ‘Hand-made Christmas market’ makes its way to the Mariaplaats. The name of the market already says it; homemade products like warm gloves, hand-made lamps, sweet soaps, nice woolly hats and much more of the hand-made category. The whole city of Utrecht is coming together on these winter days and a lot of fairs are present throughout the whole city. This fair is one of my favourites for finding unique and original Christmas presents. It is a fair that has a lot of ambiance, with a lot of creativity present. It is inspirational to see the things people can make. This market offers a huge range of products and that’s why buying my Christmas presents on this market is always a success. I can find anything ranging from art, to jewellery, interior products, toys, clothing and a massive amount of things for in, or under the tree. I always enjoy strolling through this market and discovering the little stands, it just never gets tiring. And, if you’re really keen, you can sign up on their website to get a stand yourself. Are you brave enough to sell your creativity?
Tip! This market also has the best coffees and gluhwein to warm you up!
Where: Mariaplaats, 3511 Utrecht
On the same day as the Hand-made Christmas market, you can also find a Christmas fair that is a little smaller in size, but nevertheless, just as special! You can find the market called the ‘Streekmarkt’ on the Twijnstraat, which is the oldest shopping street of Utrecht. This is one of my favourite streets in the city as it is a lovely, small, and local street where you can find yourself in the midst of students and uptown citizens of Utrecht
The idea of this market is that you can familiarize yourself with all the goodness that you can’t find in a regular supermarket. It is a market that broadcasts an enjoy – experience – and stay a little longer to try some goodies – vibe. It is all about buying food and knowing where it comes from, who makes it, and hot it is made. Besides a lot of good food and well-prepared dishes, this fair also has bars, terraces, special gifts, Christmas decorations, live music, and a lot of the Christmas-spirit! The fair offers music, live bands, and other forms of entertainment. All in all, this food fair gives you a good way to spend your winter weekend.

Visiting a Christmas market can always brighten up your days and make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, which is sometimes needed badly during these cold months. So come join me this winter and embrace the season!
