A PLACE WITH HISTORY… AND BEER – THE BEER CAFÉ TO GO!
We could say that the booze culture in Utrecht is pretty high. And when it comes to beer, we never have an excuse not to have one, right? Whether it’s because you had a long day of work, you want to celebrate the weekend, or you just want to enjoy a beautiful day in Utrecht, beer is always an answer. Especially craft beers. And where can we find those? In the Belgian beer café Olivier, of course!
If you have ever been in Belgium, you will know what a beer café’s atmosphere can do to you. It’s the appearance and the ambience of these cafés that make the whole experience exciting. But can the Dutch endorse this Belgian experience? Hell yeah! In this case we are especially lucky because we have Olivier, and Olivier is a Belgian beer café right in the centre of town. Olivier is a craft brewery that offers the tastiest Belgian brews, the best vibes, and the most amazingly friendly people. The whole experience of the wide variety of Belgian beers and the Belgian setting make it an enjoyable place to go for a few drinks…or two. The beers ordered are served in the proper glassware, which are specifically matched with one another to compliment the taste. My ultimate favourite beer is Delirium beer. But I would recommend starting your experience with a Speciality beer as these are served in really cool glassware.
Yet I shouldn’t forget to mention that not only does Olivier offer a huge range of craft beers, but they also have a Burgundian menu card, including things like crunchy, salty fries and richly flavoured mussels. You probably get the picture; they want to give you the experience of an authentic Belgian evening, with all the aspects that go with it. Also, to give some credit to the staff, the service is great and everyone working there seems to know a lot about the different craft beers and could even give you personal advice on which beers would suit you best according to your tastes. It doesn’t matter what type of person you are, all the locals in Utrecht are present in Olivier; from yuppies, and business people, to students and hipsters, everyone tags along! So no reason not to join in on the fun!
Besides the beers and food, it’s also not too bad to know a little bit about the history of the place, and trust me; it’s worth a read. When passing Olivier, you might think it is a small, cosy bar where everyone squishes up to have a drink. But you know what they always say, ‘never judge a book by its cover’. Don’t just pass by, but have a look inside; you might be surprised by what you see. The historical building itself is actually an old hidden church for the 16th century, which means the outside is probably less than a third of the inside. My mouth dropped open the first time I walked in. Extremely high ceilings, a huge organ, wooden furniture, beautiful chandeliers, and a nostalgic ambience. It has a charm, drinking beer in an old church. All in all, the unique beers, and the décor make it a top location.
Tip! Want to check the place out? It’s definitely best to make a reservation in advance, as this hotspot is always very busy (even during regular week days). And when you do go for a drink, let me know what you thought by commenting!
