Hello, my lovelies! How are you all doing? Today’s post is going to be about cultural appropriation. Many of you might not know the term cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is the name of adapting specific elements of one culture by the members of another culture. Honestly, in my experience term, cultural appropriation has a negative connotation as in people don’t like when you do it.
In my experience some Pakistanis living in the Netherlands are strangled so badly by their own culture that they think cultural appropriation is a very negative thing. The thing is sharing culture is not a bad thing, I mean like over thousands of years humans have adapted culture from each other. Human beings have adapted vast religions, beliefs, art and food. Surely each country has their unique value but just because each culture has their own unique qualities don’t mean it shouldn’t be shared in fact it would be so informative to learn new things and adapt good things.
What I’m trying to say is if you are a Pakistani living in the Netherlands it might be good idea to learn about Dutch culture and adapt any good things you like and make them part of daily life, for example, Dutch people are very open to transgender and homosexuality while it’s a Taboo in Pakistan, Dutch people are like I don’t care who wants to be what its none of my business. As a young Pakistani adult instead of disliking the fact of someone being transgender be open to it and support the fact that they can do whatever they want. What I’m trying to say is don’t freeze yourself in one culture, be respectful to other cultures and experience them for a change. I personally like Turkish culture a lot that’s because Turks have somehow the same culture as Pakistan.
Here are a few things that you should do before you come to the Netherlands (or already living in the Netherlands):
- Learn about Dutch culture, trust me life would be much easier. When I came to the Netherlands I had no idea how Dutch people are because I didn’t even try to learn about it and nobody told me. Honestly, I found myself alienated among Dutch people. Don’t be an alien give it a chance you don’t always have to adapt things but just learn them for yourself.
- Break the Taboo of being strangled by Pakistani values, loosen up, be open-minded and experience new things. Have an open heart give new things a chance to happen to you. Don’t be scared of losing your values because you won’t, they are already embedded in you. Just be open enough to learn new cultures and, at least, adapt good qualities.
I know you might be thinking I’m out of my senses and may be white washed but trust me, holding on to your culture so bad that you are not even living in anymore won’t make things easier. Being true to yourself and sticking to yourself is a good thing but you just need to loosen up a bit, its ok nothing is wrong with that. I don’t want you to adapt bad things I want you to be mature enough to know the difference between good and bad things. Once you have learned new things you will see how beautiful is life and you will adapt positive things automatically.
That’s it for today; I’ll be back next week with another post in the mean time comment down below and let me know what you think of cultural appropriation. Is it bad and why do you think it’s bad?
