Jamie has officially started his war against sugar! He has been travelling around the world telling everyone about the effects which eating too much sugar can have on your life. Sugar actually provides the body with empty calories that give us energy, but without any nutrients. As a result, we eat more, but we don’t feel full. This of course, leads to an increased risk of weight gain, certain diseases and highs and lows in energy levels, which leave you feeling tired and craving for even more sugar! And I think we all know those times where we eat one cookie and all of a sudden you ate the whole package… And lets not forget our pearly whites, which are not too happy with all that sugar either. It is really difficult to eat products without any sugar in it, as everything that has been processed contains loads! But do not fret; there is actually a very easy solution! Stick to fresh products such as fruit and vegetables instead of processed food out of a package.
For anyone who would like to start eating and living more healthy, Jamie offers us 10 useful tips to start living healthy and still be happy. I live by these rules; I think they are the answer to any doubts and questions a person can have before actually taking the step to a healthier lifestyle.
1. Cook from scratch
Having full control about what you put into your meal and into your mouth is very important!
2. Eat a balanced diet
Try to eat as many food groups as you can and also in the right portions.
3. Variety is key – Eat the rainbow
Try to eat a wide arrange of fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, eggs, lean meats, seeds, pulses, whole grains and naturally low fat dairy products. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, different colours provide your body with the different nutrients it needs to stay healthy and strong! Not only the green ones are good for you!
4. Understand what you are eating
It is important to understand where your food comes from and how it affects your body!
5. Eat nutritious calories
Make sure the majority of your energy intake comes from nutritious calories that also provide your body with minerals, protein, vitamins, fibre and good fats. Avoid those empty calories!
6. Don’t skip breakfast
Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and helps you to be alert and awake throughout the day. Just make it wholesome and make it count!
7. Read the small print
It is important to read the packaging correctly. Be aware of the recommended portion sizes, and the sugar, salt and saturated fat contents. Remember that not all E-numbers are bad, but too many is often a bad sign.
8. Drink more water
Water is an essential part of your diet. Instead of drinking sodas, juices or energy drinks, which contain empty calories, try to drink plenty of water. Eat your calories and don’t drink them!
9. Keep active
Exercise is extremely important. Try to be as active as you can!
10. Sleep well
Make sure you get enough sleep – this is an essential part of being healthy. Allow your body the needed time to repair to be as healthy as possible!
These 10 tips provide you with the basic knowledge for a healthy lifestyle, but please remember the most important point: eating healthy is all about balance. You can still enjoy all those foods that are high in fat or sugar, but just don’t eat it every day! Your diet should mainly consist of balanced, nutritious everyday foods, and this does not mean that you can never eat your grandmas amazing apple-pie again… keep it balanced, and keep it healthy!
Are you convinced, but do you have no idea what to cook while following these “rules”? Take a look at the following recipe with oven-baked pumpkin and lamb, which is healthy, easy and still very tasty! This recipe and many other healthy daily meals can be found in Jamie’s new book, Jamie’s everyday superfood, which you can buy here.
