Veganism has advantages but also challenges. One of those challenges, I discussed in my last blog, was going out for dinner. Let me sketch you a situation: it has been a stressful time with deadlines and exams and you would like to unwind and relax with your friends by going out of dinner. This should not be too difficult but unlike your friends you are vegan. So, let the challenge begin, you will either have to convince your friends to eat vegan or find a restaurant that offers vegan options.
Of course, this situation with having two ultimate options is a bit of an exaggeration. Nonetheless, you get the picture, the number of restaurants offering vegan options are limited. There is an increase but it might still be harder than you think to find something suitable for all of you.
An example is when I had dinner with a vegan friend of mine. We felt like having pizza for dinner and went to the restaurant; unfortunately the restaurant had no vegan options. So, my friend went to a lot of trouble by asking questions and negotiating with the kitchen staff in order to create a vegan dish. In the end, we had a nice dinner but it would have been nicer if it had taken so much effort and time to arrange something for her.
So, in the spirit of the upcoming holidays, I thought it would be nice to share my top 3 of hotspots with vegan options in Utrecht, the Netherlands:
This hotspot is one of the oldest restaurants of Utrecht, located at the Oudegracht and known for their pancakes. The location is quite nice as it is next to the canals of Utrecht, especially during the summers I would recommend to have dinner outside on the terrace.
On the menu you will find more than 80 different kinds of pancakes and omelettes. I can hear you think already; a vegan pancake? Yes, they have vegan pancakes! If you have a certain allergy or intolerance to a certain food, you only have to inform the staff and they will take this into account during the preparation of your meal. For example, it is possible to have a gluten, lactose or egg free pancake. Another option is to order a pancake made with a special batter. For an additional fee of a euro, it is possible to have a multigrain or vegan batter for your pancake.
Another hotspot with a nice philosophy is Gys, this restaurant says that preparing healthy food takes time and not everyone has always the time for it. Therefore, this restaurant will present you their dishes made with love and regional products. The menu consists out of a combination of normal dishes but also vegetarian and vegan dishes. Gys is located nicely in the city of Utrecht and can be found on the Voorstraat just a few minutes away from the Neude. Of course, you are welcome to enjoy a delicious meal in the nice and modern restaurant of this hotspot but you also have the option of taking the food with you on the road or home.
3. Kitchen Punx
This hotspot, called Kitchen Punx, is a non- profit organization that offers vegan dishes. They believe that everyone has their own reasons for eating vegan food, just like I discussed in my blog ‘Motivating the vegan lifestyle’. On the other hand, they also believe you can just come and eat their vegan dishes because it is delicious and not too expensive. In order to prepare a healthy and tasty meal, the products that are used are all fresh and often seasonal.
In the cosy looking restaurant, every month a new menu is presented and every day there is a different dish of the day. Finally, if you were to organize a vegan dinner party, than it would be good to keep in mind that they also do catering on request.
All the hotspots mentioned above are located in the city centre of Utrecht and they are reasonably priced. Only, Kitchen Punx is a hotspot serving only vegan dishes, the other two hotspots serve both vegan and regular dishes. In the future, I am sure that more restaurants will catch on the trend to offer vegan options. I look forward to explore Utrecht and other cities for new and fresh hotspots serving vegan food.
