Last week, I told you all about what necessities to pack in your backpack. After you put everything in there, and say goodbye to your family and friends (sometimes even pets) at the check-in counter, your trip officially begins! Well, first you have to kill time at the airport before flight. Here are 5 tips for enjoying the airport, because you never know when your plane will be delayed! Tip #4 is my favorite one.
#1: Stroll around in airport shops
You already know that whatever shop on each airport in the world is usually way to expensive! I’ve never met a backpacker that shops at the airport, because why would you spend your money on nice, expensive clothing when you’re planning to go on a hike in the mountains after you arrive at your destination? However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the shops! Look around, try on some nice outfits and tell the cashier that you forgot the time and that you have to leave. Of course, you have a plane to catch!
#2: Sit down and enjoy watching!
If you don’t like shopping and you don’t want to spend a fortune on a cup of coffee or tea, just sit down on a random couch or bench. You will be surprised by what you’ll see, airports are the most fun places to watch people since they come from all over the world! Don’t you enjoy watching people relax, run, stroll around or ask you where to go since you look like the travel expert?
#3: Get info on your gadgets
Since you have some time to kill, you might as well get informed on all the gadget you’re bringing. Visit the camera shop and show interest in the camera you already have! They can tell you all about your camera, so that you’re prepared to use it when your adventure starts! Or visit the outdoor shop where they know all about your hiking gear! Trust me, you will always hear some new feature that you didn’t know about yet.
#4: Look outside
In my opinion, the best way to kill time at the airport is to watch plane take off and land on the runways. Some airports have a great view on runways, you can even ask or look for a panorama terrace or window, since most airports have one nowadays. I still find it amazing how planes can take off in such a short period of time, with the weight of so many people and all that luggage! I just love watching them. If you do this more often, you will notice the different airplanes and airlines too. Nowadays, I can even guess from a distance which airline will be landing at Schiphol when I’m biking through Utrecht, which is about 40 kilometers away from the airport.
#5: Get the souvenir
Airports are filled with souvenir shops! Try to find the ugliest and cheapest souvenir, and make it a battle if you’re traveling with a friend or partner. It’s fun to stroll around these shops and you discover what kind of hideous (or beautiful) souvenirs are sold, even in your own country!
I hope you will enjoy your time at the airports during your trip! If not, there is always another option and that’s called sleep 😉 If you have any other tips, please leave a comment! I’d also like to know what your favorite type of plane is, in case you’re a plane lover like I am! Next week, I will have some tips for you while traveling! Hope to see you back here.
