Do you have your eye on a special someone who you want to take out for a nice night, but don’t have all the money in the world to impress them? If your answer is yes to all of these questions then these suggestions will blow your mind! Many people think that if they want to impress someone when taking them out that they immediately need to spend lots of money, but that really isn’t the case. It’s about the quality of the evening that matters, not the quantity that you spend. Taking your date out for dinner is of course lovely, but if you don’t want the night to end there, I have also come up with some places that you can go to afterwards to get some delicious cocktails as well.
Bar Huf is a great little restaurant to go on a first date. It is a dark, small, and intimate bar where you can eat amazing comfort food. If you want to have a casual night out, then this is definitely the place to go. The restaurant has a very relaxed, and easy-going atmosphere, which will make you and your date feel at ease, and get rid of those first date jitters. Bar Huf is situated on one of the most popular streets in Amsterdam: the Regulierdwarsstraat, which is also known as the most famous gay street in Amsterdam. This makes the location excellent for a date because it is known, and easily accessible with public transportation.
The restaurant’s menu offers American delicacies all made with local products. Something that’s unique about Bar Huf’ is that the kitchen is open after midnight! So, if you or your date can’t meet till later in the evening you can still enjoy a meal here, which don’t cost more than €11,50. The menu is a typical American menu, with juicy burgers, meaty spareribs, and big hot dogs, for unbelievably good prices. The thing that I recommend that you should get if you go to Bar Huf is the pulled pork burger, with homemade barbeque sauce and herb fries, which costs only €10; it tastes absolutely incredible.
After having had a really satisfying dinner you might not want the night to end yet, so why not propose that you go to a cocktail bar after? If your date likes the idea then you should for sure check out Door 74. What’s ideal about this bar is that it is right across from Bar Huf, so they really go hand-in-hand in making a perfect date! These prices are not necessarily cheap, but if you combine it with the affordable prices of Bar Huf then it balances out.
Door 74 is a cocktail bar like you’ve never experienced before, with lots of comfortable leather couches, giving it a lounge-y, yet elegant vibe. The menu is also unique, not only because it has over 30 cocktails on it (ranging from €7,50 – €25), but also because they are displayed in toy view masters!
Now I know that I mentioned that the prices range from €7,50 – €25, but don’t let that scare you. Most cocktails cost around €15, but if that is still a bit too pricey for you, you can also get the cocktail of the day, which costs around €7,50. And trust me, the cocktail of the day never disappoints. 😉
If you’re looking to take your date to a restaurant that is a bit more towards the fancy side, then Humphrey’s is the place for you! This restaurant actually has multiple venues around Amsterdam, on the Spuistraat, and the Nieuwezijds Kolk, both in the center of the city. Here, you can get a 3 course menu for a set price of €29,50, which won’t disappoint. Upon arrival a kind host, who will show you to your table in the beautifully decorated restaurant, greets you. The interior is somewhat mesmerizing because of the gorgeous, large chandeliers that light up the area, showcasing the stunning, rustic, décor.
The menu offers dishes that are made with fresh and tasty ingredients that you just do not want to miss. You will probably even have to visit the restaurant multiple times (like I did), because everything on the menu looks so amazing! One of the dishes that I certainly suggest that you try during your date is the Peking duck with crispy beet chips and white butter sauce; you will want to lick the plate till it’s clean (but that’s probably not the best idea if you’re on a date). As dessert you and your date can share a romantic “parade of desserts”; with lots of different little chocolate bites. Of course you can also get a separate dessert each, and in that case you should try the tiramisu.
La Cage is somewhere to go if you want to continue your romantic evening after dinner. This fancy, French restaurant has some very interesting cocktails. This cocktail bar is also situated on the Regulierdwarsstraat, and has a striking interior, which will most likely impress your date. When you enter the bar you see a long black bar, which showcases all of the alcohol that they serve, and has a lot of chairs and high tables around it. If you walk a bit further you will enter a narrow, quieter room where you can also enjoy a cocktail in a more intimate atmosphere.
Though if you want to take your date to a place that is more fancy than casual, the prices are also going to be a bit more expensive, though still affordable. The cocktail menu offers around 15 unique, French cocktails all for around €10,50. The La Cage Aux Folles is the most popular cocktail at the bar; it is made with dark rum, fresh lime, brown sugar, blue berries, strawberries, and prosecco. La Cage will be the perfect ending to your date night.
