Four minute read
If you are trying to learn to play the guitar, but don’t have time or money for guitar lessons from a guitar instructor, you should definitely check out how much you can learn from the teachers of YouTube.
An instructor can be very helpful, because you can have actual interaction. You can ask things when it is not entirely clear. But you will be surprised how much you can learn from just watching tutorials. And a big advantage is that you can rewind the video whenever you want. This way your lessons can take as long as you want.
For this week I have selected the YouTube account I like the most.
We’ll start off with the biggest YouTube account of them all. With Martyzsongs, Marty Schwartz has reached the impressive amount of over 1.500.000 subscribers. The many videos he has uploaded have a total view of more than 450.000.000.
If you start watching them you will soon see why Marty is so popular. He offers tutorial videos for almost any popular song and for any level. Another cool thing about Martyzsongs is that you can find tutorials for both acoustic and electric guitar.
Just as on Martyzsongs you can find many videos on this account. And the best thing is that Justin Guitar Songs still uploads at least once a week.
What distinguishes JustinGuitar Songs from most YouTube accounts is that Justin sings along during his lessons. I wouldn’t personally watch the videos for the quality of his singing, but it is very decent, and it is really good for if you want to learn how to sing along with the songs yourself.
This is without a doubt the YouTube account with the easiest lessons. If you just started playing guitar, and you are looking for tutorials that can help you play songs fast, I would recommend Learnguitarasttips.
With his videos Ian takes you through an entire song and teaches you how to play it by showing the chords with an easy strumming pattern. He always sings along while doing so.
A fun fact about this YouTube account is that as far as I know there is no video in which you see the face of Ian.
I you’re up for a bigger challenge and you want to play more than just chords, Gareth Evans is the right YouTube account. Almost all of his tutorials will teach you how to play songs fingerstyle (the technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips). This is quite a bit harder to do than playing the chords, but Gareth explains it really good.
What I also really like about this account is that when Gareth is teaching you how to play a song, you always see the tabs. This is a very convenient way of learning to play songs bit by bit.
The last YouTube account I wanted to share does not actually have tutorials on it. But I would definitely recommend it for inspiration. On his account Josh has uploaded many videos of him covering songs with many different guitars. It seems like he can literally play any type. I especially really like his version of sultans of swing from Dire Straits.
What I also like about this YouTube account is that you get to see someone who is clearly just having fun and making music with his friend. Isn’t that what it is all about in the end?
I hope you find these suggestions of the teachers of YouTube helpful. What YouTube accounts do you follow? Let me know in the comments below. And stay tuned for next week’s blog post about the four chords that will help you play many songs.
