A popular App like Snapchat is not able to escape the world of advertisement and sponsorship like Instagram isn’t either and let’s not even start with Facebook. Marketeers always find their ways for each platform how to best get under our skin or better said in our wallet. But I like that Snapchat really doesn’t hide its collaborations with companies obviously making business.
Have you already taken a look at “Discover” when you swipe left on your start screen on Snapchat? Snapchat displays 12 News Channels like CNN, MTV, Yahoo, Vico or Cosmopolitan. They have the chance to present their highlights via text, moving images or videos.
It is fun to look at and Snapchats’ easy use is also detectable here. You can watch or read all different kinds of news from the latest celebrity gossip to current affairs. Every channel can offer up to 6 stories which are align with the general Snapchat-principle of automatically deleting its content after 24 hours. You can also send the content you viewed to one or more friends by tapping the screen for some seconds.
For only a hand full of Dollars, 450.000 to be specific, Snapchat offers companies to engage with its consumers in live story context. When you have turned on your location in your Snapchat settings, you will be able to use filters based on the point of interest. Also to special occasions like black Friday or Halloween, companies can book Snapchat filters for advertisement. Currently the two top companies making use of these are the Universal Studios to advertise new movies coming up soon and McDonald’s when consumers snapchatting in one of their many restaurants.
The downside – Snapchatters advertisement
Watching the Snapchat Stories of my favorite Snapchat stars I sometimes ask myself ‘is that them talking or the brand manager of the product or shop they are telling us about?’ It is annoying that I even have to be that skeptical when I generally like watching their snaps. Snapchat offering Discover as a new channel or sponsored lenses is one side. We users can decide, if we want to take a look, use it or not. Snapchat stars suddenly starting to advertise is the other. Of course we decide which Snapchatters to follow, but mostly they start off great, being all natural and funny and switch to “have you tried the new MAC Diva lipstick with fitting lip-liner Ms Diva Pro and black Extreme mascara … its sooo awesome!” Yeah right any other products I need to know about you are personally never wearing? But in the end that is their business and risk of losing followers when starting to sell their soul (uuuuh dark, I know, but just stop and go back to making Snaps of you and your friend jamming in the car please!).
