Don’t stay home, explore Ecuador!
The people in Ecuador are, In my opinion one of the kindest people in the world. They are very thankful (greatfull) when you buy their products, or when you come to their restaurants. I have been to enough places where this is not the case at all. I won’t let you wait let’s start on this journey.
Isla de Plata
Also known as the poor man’s Galapagos, this is the smaller version of the Galapagos. You can go there with a little boat, with locals. On your way there there is a chance that you see wales. On the island there are multiple exceptional species. Sea lions and especially different sorts of birds are on the island. Blue footed birds, also called Jan van Gent birds. Those birds are special because of their blue feet. This Island is just 27 km from the Ecuadorian coast, so for a day trip is this an amazing option.
The hat fabric in Cuenca is a panama hat fabrics. You can not easily find the fabric. You need to go to the town Cuenca and ask one of the locals whether they are able to bring you there. In this town it is a known fabric for the locals so this works quite well. It is very interesting since here are all the real panama hats made. They made me a custom made hat there. It is a very cool experience!
Weave at a local weaver
To go further with self made products from Ecuador. There are a lot of local weavers who make beautiful poncho’s, sweaters, vests etc. Most of the products are made from alpaca wool. You can’t get more authentic clothing than this. The weaver we visited was an old woman who was working very securely in a complete calm environment. It is very puny work, which need to be precise. Her husband made music instruments from for example goat nails. It is beautiful to see that those people are so dedicated to their work and that they do it with a lot of love.
Train trip to devil nose
This is trip I will never forget. I told you in my last blog that I had done a train trip in one of the oldest trains in Taiwan. So I have done 2 trips in 2 of the oldest trains of the world. In Ecuador the second one is located. You don’t take the train random, but it is the trip to the devil nose mountain. This is not a normal train, since your seats are on the roof of the train. When the train leaves, all the children gather around the train to get candy or toys. From the roof you can throw it to them. This sounds a little strange, why not just give it? But that is for your own safety. The smiles on the faces of the kids are priceless.
The Napo jungle was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen in Ecuador. You go there by boat over the Amazon river. The river doesn’t look inviting to jump in, because the water is milk chocolate brown and there are crocodiles who live there, so skip that. By arriving you see a few thatched houses in the middle of the jungle. This is where you stay during the nights. During the days you will go into the jungle and see the most amazing species like panthers, tigers, snakes, turtles, leopards. You can see the fresh tracks of the animals. There is a boot house, and at first think you do not need those boots. But when you go into the jungle you realise you do! From one on the other moment the weather can completely change. From a bloody hot sun to a humid tropical rain storm. Go here and go on adventure in the jungle, it is amazing!
Little thing’s you should not do in Ecuador
Drink fire water – this is the strongest alcoholic I have ever tasted
Take cash – taking cash form a random cash machine because they just give back money with their hands though the cash machine. You probably don’t believe it but it happens there.
I hope you enjoyed my blog again, and that you will go to those places in Ecuador! If you have any questions or comments do not hesitate to leave them in the comments space. In this way I can keep in touch with you guys!
