- Now that the new year has started and I have stuffed myself with delicious (but also unhealthy) food, my body is screaming for some healthy food! Of course I have enjoyed every bite I took during the holidays, but my bowel is quite a bit less satisfied. Time for a good portion of vitamins to cleanse my body. In other words: it is time for a detox. As complicated and rough that may sound, a detox can be really simple and cheap. You only have to change a couple of little things to give your body a healthy boost. In this article I will give you eight tips for a simple detox!
There are many ways to detox and of course there are a hundred opinions when we talk about what is and is not good for your body. That is why I think that it is very important that you listen to your body and that you do what feels right. So please use the tips that you think suit you best and leave the ones be which you do not feel comfortable.
Start your day with a glass of lukewarm water
You have probably heard this one before, but it is the best way to get your body started! If you add some lemon juice in there it will also help cleanse your body (you will probably need to visit the toilet a bit more often) and boost your immune system. How to: squeeze half a lemon (or take some drips of concentrated lemon juice) and pour it in a glass of lukewarm water. Drink it before you eat anything and use a straw. The straw prevents the acid from touching your teeth and damaging it.
Avoid added sugars, e-numbers and strange additives you have never heard of
Check the labels on your food and drinks, leave it on the shelves of the supermarket if you have no clue what the ingredients are, if there is much added sugar or you would not use the ingredients when you’d freshly prepare your own food.
Drink ginger tea
This would be my favourite. I. Love. Ginger. Tea. Ginger activates your digestion and prevents inflammations. Ginger is a perfect remedy when you have a flu or feeling sick. On top of all that good: it also tastes delicious. How to: squeeze about a centimetre of fresh ginger in a garlic press, put it in your cup and pour hot water over it. Or, if you manage to find pure ginger tea (without unnatural additives) you can also just use those teabags.

Eat more veggies! All of them. Preferably the darker green ones such as spinach, curly kale, rocket and paksoi (Chinese kale). These vegetables contain chlorophyll which has been proven to remove toxins from your body: ideal for a detox! Want to eat more vegetables, but don’t want to actually ‘eat’ more? Make green smoothies with fruit juice, berries and grains for breakfast and start your lunch and/or dinner with a homemade soup!
Eat biological products
Okay, so these products might be a bit more expensive but they are totally worth it. Bio food is healthier for you because they have not been in contact with toxins that determinate bugs and your proteins will not have been fed with antibiotics so they grow faster. Whatever bad additives are not in your food will not end up in your body!
Drink loads of water and avoid coffee and alcohol
Personally, I find this really hard. Not only do I love my coffee in the morning to get me started up, but I also love me some wine in the evening. However, coffee and alcohol dehydrate your body which means you will have to go extra on the glasses of water. Preferably drink up to 2 litres of water per day! Swap your coffee for herbal tea and your glass of wine for a glass of sparkling water (maybe with a little bit of vodka, okay?). And while we’re at it, also leave those cigarettes be.
Rest enough and move your body
Cleansing your body also means taking care of your body, so make sure you sleep enough and get all the rest you need. Join a gym for some exercise or combine sports with rest and join a yoga club.
But also: be realistic about your detox
You don’t have to change all your (bad) habits all at once. Take one step at a time if you want to give up smoking, and food-wise: maybe start out with three days per week and build it up to a full week. If you want to do a juice-detox, make sure you are really up for it. If your detox plans do not work out the way you have planned, do not fully give up! Seek a way that works best for you and you’ll be just fine.
Good luck! And let me know how you are doing!
Happy new year? Happy new you!
