So here we are again, hopefully you guys had such a nice holiday as I did. Last time we looked back at some innovations of 2015, but because we are in the new year now. We are going to look forward and get excited about all the new technology that is coming up. For this post I will lay down three different upcoming smartphones that I personally can’t wait to get released. What I’ve got for you is a Chinese flagship killer, a Kickstarter project that actually made it and an established brand that has to reinvent the best mobile of 2015. So with no further ado, let’s start!
Xiaomi is the company that is producing the most talked about smartphone from the last quarter: Xiaomi Mi 5. This Chinese based company is known to produce smartphones with flagship technology that cost substantially less than the iPhones and Samsung Galaxies of this world. The Mi 5 is probably going to be no exception. Although everything written here is based upon rumours, these rumours come from sources who in the past have been right about these things. The spec sheet alone is very impressive;
- New Qualcomm 820 chipset,
- 14440×2560 QHD screen
- 4GB of RAM

Besides the specifications, leaked renderings of the phone look very attractive. Off course this is a subjective matter but in my opinion its design is just as good looking as the Galaxy S6 or IPhone 6S. There will probably be two versions of the phone when it is allegedly released end of January. A larger ‘plus’ version with a 5.5 or 5.7 inch display and the standard version which will probably carry a 5.2 inch display. I’m ready for a new phone this year and this is definitely one of the contenders. Keep checking out this blog as I’m going to review the Mi 5 the minute it comes out!
Kickstarter gone right
Many Kickstarter projects perish because they aren’t funded enough and the ones that do get funded, quite a few of them don’t deliver. But luckily underneath all the so called innovative products, sometimes we see a speck of light. In this case it is the Nextbit Robin. Nextbit is a company founded with the concept in mind that smartphones must become smarter, not bigger. In this case bigger means equipped with bigger storage, the Nextbit Robin does the opposite. Instead of adding extra Gigabytes the Robin offers you cloud storage. The use of this cloud storage is optimized because of the ‘learning’ factor of this phone. It can tell which apps, photo’s, videos, contacts you use and which are only there because well, you forget to put them on your computer. The Robin automatically stores all this information in the cloud for you, easily accessible but not interfering with your internal storage. So the internal storage is fairly limited in the Robin a merely 32GB, but you get 100GB of free cloud storage to make up for it. The phones design is very funky and the specs are almost flagship worthy. It carries a Qualcomm 808 which is an older processor but it can still deliver a punch. I am definitely keeping an eye out for this breath of fresh air in the world of smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy S7
This blogpost is full of rumours and I’m loving it, this part isn’t any different. For many the Samsung Galaxy S6 was the best smartphone of 2015 and with the Galaxy S7 allegedly coming out in February 2016 we cannot wait what Samsung will bring us. Here is what we think we know:
- Two versions: a 5.1” with a flat screen and a 5.7” curved screen as the S6 Edge+
- Pressure sensitive screen similar to the iPhone 6S
- Versions with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or a 8890 Exynos chipset
- Released at Mobile World Congress 2016
So this all sounds very exciting and for the rest of the spec sheet you can expect flagship quality components. Super AMOLED screen, 4GB Ram, NFC, Adreno 530 GPU, 20MP camera, 4K video etc. This is what we expect from Samsung and anything less would be a let-down. Also there are a few things we want to see improved from the S6, the battery life wasn’t up to par with barely a day worth of juice. Also the removable battery and expandable storage weren’t included in this version which made Samsung fans very unhappy. So if Samsung can deliver on these things it truly will be the smartphone to compete with this year. Again as with the Xiaomi Mi 5 it will also compete to be the smartphone that will be sitting my pocket.
