The green scene is slowly developing in Utrecht. More and more organic and sustainable shops are popping up in the city. We love this green movement and want to present you our six favorite organic and sustainable shops, restaurants and places in Utrecht. Here we go:
BAG AND BUY
This great grocery shop called BAG AND BUY works without any packaging. It’s the first of its kind in the Netherlands and recently opened its doors in Utrecht in the beginning of September 2015. The system is just amazing; you bring your own packaging like jars and bags and then you fill them up with the food you are looking for. And they have everything; Honey, flour, oil, sweets, grains, chocolate, spaghetti etc. What’s so good about it? Well, first you just buy the amount you really need which comes in handy when you live in a single household; second there is no unnecessary plastic waste and third you can buy high quality and organic products. Go check it out and get inspired by this new and sustainable way of grocery shopping!

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays you can visit VREDENBURG SQUARE MARKET to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, second hand books and much more. Next to that you can find some Dutch food specialties; a wide range of cheeses, kibbeling (fried fish) and warm stroopwafels (cookies): On Friday’s part of the square is reserved for local farmers (Boerenmarkt).
At the BOERENMARKT you will find cheese, fish and delicacies: all organic and produced or harvested in and around Utrecht. Don’t forget to come by bike and to bring your own bags!

From Friday evening till Monday morning you can order your weekly groceries online. RECHTSTREEX gets the products from local farmers, beekeepers, gardeners, cheese dairies and bakeries in and around Utrecht and on Wednesday or Thursday you can pick up your order nearby your area. EATING OUT – LOCAL AND ORGANIC
There’s not always time to prepare your own healthy and organic food so what about eating at the restaurant GYS? Organic, take-away, fresh, meat, veggie, vegan, fish, local; these are just some terms that apply to GYS. The chefs prepare their meals with respect for local and healthy products, for healthy or better said cheap prices. You can go there for lunch and dinner. Enjoy your food in their nature-inspired restaurant. Make sure to make a reservation for dinner, this place is mostly crowded and it’s not easy to get a table when just walking in. Enjoy the healthy and organic food!

THE DIFFERENT KIND OF FRIES
Healthy fries? You find them in Utrecht’s FRIETWINKEL close to Neude. In August 2014 opened the first organic fries take-away in Utrecht. Every lunch time people are queuing in front of their shop to taste their delicious fries. So they must be good! Next to their amazing fries, they also sell other organic products like typical Dutch Kroketten. Eet smakelijk!

UTRECHT’S BEST SECOND HAND STORE
Not just food can be sustainable – cloths can be, too! We just love this second hand clothing store called EPISODE. The shop is very well organized and has quite affordable prices.
Every time you visit EPISODE you will find pieces from back in the days – perfect for your vintage outfit or for a theme party! The shop gets its cloths from charity organizations, which sell them to this and other cool and trendy vintage clothing shops around Europe.
Every piece is washed, repaired if necessary or even made into something new to get the most out of the cloth donation. The whole shopping experience is unbelievably sustainable; for instance instead of getting your purchase in a plastic bag, they give you an old tote bag with their brand name printed on it – for free! Cool isn’t it?
So before running to all the commercial and mainstream shops in and around Utrecht, check out this great second hand store – you might find some real treasures in there. Have fun shopping!
