West Ham – Liverpool: The same old story
New year, old hope in this so-called the ‘most interesting part of the season’. As the first game of 2016, we visited West Ham, where we acquired our first loss (already). As my New Year’s Resolution I have promised myself that I won’t get angry on L’pool games this year. I don’t care anymore how many points we are behind the 4th position, how many games we need to win, and what score we want from the other fixtures. It looks like we have overrated the team for this season.
Next year we might get off from the most ridiculous roller coaster, where anything can happen, especially to us. Next year we might have 4-5 consecutive games with an okay performance. With this number of determinative midfielders and quality strikers on the bench it just won’t happen. It just can’t happen. It was obvious (again) that we were missing our captain more than ever. In our way of football, where good pressing is the key, Henderson has a huge part to play. With him on the pitch we have lost only against Watford this season, where he performed the best by far. In order to have a stable (period of a) season, compulsive rotation of the midfield won’t help.
For sure, next year there will be games, where the opponents will score from our mistakes. This is exactly what West Brom did and learning from it West Ham just did the same. West Ham is in front us on the table, only because they use their tall striker better than we do or because we haven’t learnt the way to defend against this kind of football. West Ham have shot 18 times and 10 of them were on the goal, which is more than the average of a Klopp team. The same thing happened before only once since we have Klopp in charge. We can all start thinking about if Lucas is the best choice for the defensive midfielder position. I’m not saying we have lost because of Lucas but we can’t deny that the most important position of this half diamond tactic is the defensive midfielder. If that position isn’t performing we have no chance of winning (especially because we have no strikers to score more than we concede).
Hopefully, next year we won’t feel like we want to commit a suicide when we see the Ibe-Benteke duo in the starting eleven. They have successfully performed 0 (!!!!!!) tackles out of 0 chances with 0 chances created. I have already texted these statistical numbers to Klopp to open up his eyes. A couple of months have passed since his arrival so I am sure he sees these connections (or that there are no connections) between players. I still can’t figure out if the decision of playing them together was because of rotation, or because we are mentally and physically preparing for the semi final of the Capital One Cup.
Next Year, hopefully we will have an easier fixture, where we don’t have to play against the two surprise teams in a row, especially not away. Hopefully, in the coming year, we won’t concede more headers because of the mistakes of our defenders on the two wings. I don’t even want to add all of these goals together what we conceded because of thir mistakes, but right now I remember the one against Dinamo, the one against Aston Villa and now two goals against West Ham. It would be nice to finally come up with a solution; our pressing could be the key. If our pressing would work well, we could press the winger sooner to make him decide faster where he will pass the ball. If it would happen the winger wouldn’t have enough time to wait for the striker to run in front of Lovren, than cross the ball on his head and watch him heading the ball into our net.
Hopefully, next year our little Brazilians will be familiar with the well-known saying: you can only score if you shoot the ball. And hopefully he will understand that we can also score if not only he shots the ball. Statistics shows that he shots on the goal the most in the whole league but his efficiency is lower than Danny de Vito. I can’t explain if it is because of his baby or because the Brazilians can’t perform during the (British) winter, but I really hope with the first sunshine he will start shining again.
Hopefully, next year we will have a striker, who believes that he can score goals after he scored the two winning goals in our past two games. We can all see that the type of player he is, doesn’t really fit into Klopp’s philosophy, but when he scored the winning goal he was the good decision, today he didn’t score so obviously he was the bad decision.
Hopefully, next year we will have some speed and aggression in our game. We just missed the power against the heavy metal football that West Ham played. Of course, if you concede a goal early in the game it’s never a good sign, especially not when you are playing against a team that is famous of their stable and well-organized defense. I am just curious when will we understand that if we let the winger cross the ball into our 5 meter box they will score it no matter if it is in the 1st, 5th or the last minute of the game.
Hopefully, next year all the big teams will start the season as poor as they did this year, so we might will have a chance to find ourselves fighting for one of the top 4 spots. If not, there is always a new year.
