As we can see from the chart above, in 2014, China imported 25 TV reality shows from all over the world. And this number is still increasing in 2015. Is Chinese market going to be captured by outside TV shows? I wouldn’t say that.
In 2014, the spring’s largest global distribution market and leading TV & online content development event (MIPTV) was hosted in France. Britain’s ITV International Media Group publishing division (ITVSGE) announced that they will introduce Chinese music reality show “Song of China” and they will be in charge with its international distribution rights and the UK broadcasting rights. “Song of China” has become China’s first original programming file output mode talent overseas. A Chinese TV obtain employment said : “This will make Chinese reality shows find cultural self-confidence.” It took only a year and a half for Chinese television industry from purchasing foreign programming mode to sell local programming mode. In fact, this is an important changing of the Chinese reality show mode from the “buying” to “selling”.
In early 2014, “Song of China” started broadcasting at CCTV-3, the program mode was developed and researched independently. From the format, the competition rules to the system are all created by itself. In the program, four mentors plays producers roll as well, they will select songs from contestants and publish those songs within their original album. The ratings reached audience share of 37%.
“Song of China” was a successful result of learning from foreign TV shows. The creation team is the team from “The Voice of China” – Canxing. After they gained experience from “The Voice of Holland”, they came up with this idea which fits more local audience’s taste.
In fact, the good news from the festival is more than this one. According to Canxing publicity director Lu Wei, in addition to ITVSGE introduction of the “Song of China”, the international organization FRAPA invited Canxing to be the first Chinese director of this organization.
In the Television Festival, in addition to the export of “Song of China” program, Zhejiang TV’s “I’m not a star,” also serves as the official recommendation of the TV Festival, officially entered the international market. Chinese original program “Chinese character Heroes”, also appears at the Festival magazine.
A senior professional who attend the Television Festival program many times said that in 2012 at the television festival, Chinese obtain employments were taking a large proportion of the festival, representing their TV channels to buy programs. And in 2013, it was different in that situation. “Western model has gradually lost the initial competitive advantage. With some patterns ratings defeat, people realized that ocean model is not lucrative. Chinese TV channels also pay more attention to its own model development.”
Within two years, ITVSGE will make the British version of “Song of China”. This positive example could encourage other Chinese TV channels to make their own program instead of buying programs. However it still needs time to learn from foreign programs and practice in reality. In the future, Chinese TV shows still has to coexist with foreign programs for years but the Chinese reality show market will not be taken over.
