Are you a food and culture lover? If yes, please read on and follow my blog in the upcoming month. I will be sharing delicacy of Taiwan. You might wonder why Taiwan? Well, there is an idiom in Taiwan saying that “foods are the most important to people.” Besides, I am a Taiwanese girl who has been spoiled by the wonderful treat of Taiwanese food. I will be sharing the eating culture of Taiwan along with representative local dishes’ recipes.
I will start with a brief background information of Taiwan. Taiwan is an island nation located in east Asia with 23millions of population. Taiwan is known for its hospitality of people, modern cities, beautiful natures and the food culture.
One thing I found the most interesting under the food culture is the way of greeting. Instead of “How are you?”, people say “Have you eaten?” when greeting each other. This has to do with the history background of many were poor back in the days, therefore, food is valued importantly, and this has continued in the culture.
Growing up, food has always been the focal point of any family, friends, or events gathering. Every night, my family sat together at a round table to have dinner together, we shared many dishes including vegetables, meat, or tofu that is served by mom (sometimes dad) on the table. I have always enjoyed the way people eats together around round tables, I find it cozy and this way people can easily talk to each others.
As I have been living in the Netherlands for years, many of my friends here have never tired real Taiwanese food, also because there aren’t really Taiwanese cuisines in Utrecht (where I live). Therefore, since I need to make my own Taiwanese food when I get homesick, I want to share recipes of the local food in Taiwan to those who enjoy cooking and exploring a taste of Taiwanese delicacy.
If you are those ones, please follow and read on my following posts. I will lead you to experience a wonderful treat of Taiwanese cuisine in my blog. In the following weeks, I will be sharing what is the worth trying street food, how and what do the locals eat, and what is the traditional holiday dish.
