Local people in Jakarta are the Betawi. The Betawis are an ethnic group that came from various parts of Indonesia such as, Malays, Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Bugis and many more. They are a mixture of difference races and ethnic groups, who for generations have made Jakarta their home. Their culture is a treasure of colour, tradition, song, dance, clothing, cuisine, language and dialect.

Betawi Traditional Dance
been influenced the inhabitant of Jakarta for centuries. There will be ondel-ondel, dance, art, and many more. Of course, there will be a lot of Betawi traditonal food as well. I love Betawi cuisine, because I was born and raised there so, I grown up with their food. In Jakarta festival, there will be traditional delicacies like selendang mayang, a dessert made from rice flour and palm sugar, asinan (pickled vegetables salad) while others enjoyed Melayu dangdut performances.
As I promised to you from the last blog that I will share another delicious dessert and this time is from Jakarta, es selendang mayang, a traditional dessert of Betawi.
Here is the es selendang mayang recipe!

Es Selendang Mayang
Ingredients

selendang mayang
Selendang mayang:
150 ml of water leave suji (20 sheet of 4 leaves suji and pandan leaves)
250 ml of water
50 gr of corn starch
50 ounces of rice flour
½ tsp salt
2 drops of green dye
Ice cubes

syrup of palm sugar
Syrup of palm sugar:
200 grams of brown sugar
200 ml of water
1 pandan leaves

coconut milk
coconut milk:
750 ml coconut milk from 1 coconut
2 bayleaves
1 pandan leaves
½ tsp salt
How to make it:
- Mix all ingredients and cook over low heat until boiling and slightly sticky. Put it in the pan. Let it cool and then cut it into squares.
- Boil all the syrup of palm sugar ingredients until boiling and thick
- Same also for coconut milk, boil all the ingredient until boiling and thick
- Serve selendang mayang with the ice cube, add syrup of palm sugar and coconut milk
