It’s been a couple of years since I studied at the HU and it’s been a lot longer since I last posted a blog on this website. A quick Google search (query: Wouter Pons) brought me here and, as faith would have it, my browser remembered a login to this website.
So, as the rebellious student I always was, I am now using this to gain some valuable backlinks to my website. But whilst doing so, teaching whoever still reads these at the HU a little something about E-marketing. I mean, that was the whole purpose of this page to begin with. Are you ready? Let’s go!
The name’s Wouter Pons, nice to meet you!
Whilst working on my own website and trying to determine organic positions in Google, I found not one, not two, but five old blogposts that I once wrote for an e-marketing class. They were about my travels to Norway as a student.
“But wait, when I Google you I can’t find any of them!”
Well, that’s because I put them on private. You see, when people Google Wouter Pons, I want them to find my site. One way to do this is to write lots of content containing the word you want Google to find the page on.
You also want this word to appear in very specific places (h1 and several h2 if possible) and a certain amount of times. Not too many though as Google will quickly be onto your game and give your site a penalty. But 3% to 5% should do the trick.
Backlinks come after content
“Alright, lots of proper content, got you!” Yes! That’s step one to the many step program. Once you’ve written a page containing the search term you want to be found on (like Wouter Pons in my perpetual example), you want some valuable backlinks.
“That’s when you get an inbound link from another website right?”
You got it! Now important to remember is that you can’t just go about and spam a shitload of links from one other website as that won’t work. You want to try and get backlinks from multiple domains and multiple servers. This variety is what makes them valuable. Make sure the anchor text matches whatever you are linking to, like Wouter Pons to a page about Wouter Pons.
The idea is that it’s hard to get backlinks, so if you gain like 50 in one day, that won’t fly either. I mean, why do you think I’ve wrote this blog several years after my graduation? It’s to gain some backlinks to my site (Trafikk Online Marketing) and teach you something in the process.
Online Marketing, professionally
“Alright, cheeky move. So what is it that you do?” Well there’s a lot of things that I do personally. Pet cats if I can, play dungeons and dragons occasionally, or highjack an old university blog. I’m also an online marketer, professionally.
Besides working as an online marketer for the most beautiful animal park in the Netherlands (Apenheul), I also work as a freelance online marketer. Which means I take on all sorts of jobs and help my clients with online marketing issues. I specialize in running ads for Google, but I have proper knowledge on search engine optimisation (SEO) too. This blog is a testament of that.
So, if you are reading this and think “In fact, I kinda do need someone to help me out with online marketing related stuff” or you know someone who does, get in touch with me and we’ll have a chat.
Back to content marketing
But enough about me. I want this shameless backlink whoring to be a valuable lesson to you. So I’ll throw in some more knowledge about content marketing. You see, you want to write something that contains the right keywords for Google to recognize it, like Wouter Pons (you see what I’m doing here?), and you want to make sure it’s the right amount of words too.
Depending who you ask you’ll get different answers, but if you ask me I will say a minimum of 500 words will do the trick. But, much like chugging vodka shots at a dank college party, the more the merrier!
“So.. chugging vodka will get me a higher position in Google?”
In fact, no. To make it easier, I’ll sum up some three of the key components to content marketing:
- Like I said, add the right keyword but don’t spam it, about 3% to 5% does it.
- Write a lot of valuable content, minimum of 500 words.
- Get a healthy amount of backlinks from different domains, but not too quickly.
“Got it! That doesn’t sound too bad. Is there anything else?”
Yeah it was alright wasn’t it? You see, the essence is rather simple, but it gets more complex the more you dive into it. There are loads of other factors that come into play when trying to rank higher in Google. I am more than willing to tell you more, but that really depends on the accessibility of this page. It also depends on the amount of backlinks I need and can safely harvest. But, if I find another keyword I want linked to my site, like ‘kosten online adverteren’, but then backed with proper content, I might post another blog.
In the meantime, stay in school, don’t buy products with palm oil, and call your grandma and ask her about her day.
